This qualitative research used a hermeneutic phenomenological approach to discover meaning in Psychological Experience of grandmother who care for a grandson. The goal of this study was to discover the essence of the experience of grandmother who care for a grandson.
The study was guided by van Manen " s method for doing research. The method of inquiry included : turning to phenomenon of interest ; inquiring and investigating experience as it was lived rather than as conceptualized ; reflecting and analyzing essential themes which characterize phenomenon ; and describing phenomenon through art of writing and rewriting. Multiple strategies for data collecting were needed : in depth face to face interview ; analysis of grandmother " s writings and drawing ; artistic works ; and analysis of examples of phenomenon in art and literature. Although the experience was different for all of the grandmother interviewed, essential themes of experience emerged ;
〈The parenting of the grandchildren which is left responsible for me〉-Taking the grandchildren because of the situation at hand, Without me, everything will be over,〈A physically tough time for me because of the hyperactive grandchildren〉-A physically tough time, uncontrollable hyperactive grandchildren, 〈Shabby-looking myself〉-My free time which has been deprived of, the grandchildren who are always of concern, I"m a person too, who have feelings and can be hurt, Shabby-looking myself, 〈Watching the grandchildren grow up, which all seems new, wonderful, and miraculous〉-New experience from raising the grandchildren, the grandchildren who are more adorable than my own kids, Quite a fun time raising the grandchildren, Vigor(energy) of life, 〈My child who I raised without knowing the time passing by 〉-My child who I raised without knowing the time passing by, I wish I had given more love and care, A stress-free grandchildren parenting, 〈the daughter-in-law who is going through tougher times than my daughter〉-I should bear with it so that it wouldn"t become a bigger problem, I feel sorry for the daughter-in-law who makes her living even apart from her kid, but I feel more pity for my daughter, 〈As I"m raising their kids like this, my child will someday return this favor.〉-When I grow old and ill, children are the ones to lean for support, The allowance money which I take fair and square by parenting the grandchildren,
Based on these results, here are the points from the experience of an old woman who goes through the grandchildren parenting process. First, the grandchildren parenting experience is an experience in which an old woman takes responsibility of raising the grandchildren instead of the working daughter or the daughter-in-law. Second, the grandchildren parenting experience is a physically and mentally tough experience. Third, the grandchildren parenting experience is an experience that gives fun and joy to the old-age which might become boring.
Fourth, the grandchildren parenting experience is an experience that arranges more secure old-age for the old woman. Fifth, the grandchildren parenting experience is an experience that gives a great feeling of self-existence both in home and society.
